The Berkeley is a renowned five star hotel off Knightsbridge. Formation Architects were asked to prepare a feasibility study to show how the number of rooms might be increased. The report dealt with internal layouts, construction logistics, town planning issues and cost. Following a period of negotiation with the City of Westminster, planning permission was obtained and construction began.
The initial phase comprised new substructure, constructed without interrupting the functioning of the hotel kitchens. The second phase involved the construction of the new superstructure within the tightly constrained service yard to create 46 new bedrooms each of 38 sqm (410 sqft).
